Little Utopia (2018)
This project explores the delicate boundary between public and private space. Each of us seeks a personal utopia — a temporary shelter to retreat alone or with friends, even within the shared domain of a public environment.
Dot-embedded cardboard modules were designed as modular “shelters” that participants could rearrange to construct their own intimate spaces. From afar, these forms blended into the environment, creating an optical illusion that blurred their contents. Only with closer attention could the figures within be revealed, challenging the viewer’s perception of visibility and privacy.
The design was installed in the courtyard of the Casey Wing, RMIT University Building 10 (Melbourne). Its modular language echoed the site’s existing Tetris-like seating structures, creating a dialogue between the intervention and its architectural context.
