Reframing Landscape: Kalbe I, II(2020)
Developed during an art residency in Kalbe, a small town in northern Germany marked by depopulation and aging demographics, this project reflects on the traces of lives left behind in a community shaped by absence. With many younger generations having moved away, the village is dotted with abandoned houses and forgotten objects — silent witnesses to change and loss.
The installation was constructed from found materials collected in Kalbe’s homes, streets, and abandoned spaces, combined with digital drawings made during walks through the town. These elements were assembled into sculptural forms and illuminated through projection mapping, transforming ordinary fragments into abstract landscapes of light.
Rather than offering a literal reconstruction, the work sought to reframe Kalbe’s landscape poetically — not as a place emptied out, but as one still resonant with memory and potential. By layering discarded objects and projected imagery, the installation gave overlooked details a renewed visibility, allowing both residents and visitors to encounter the familiar environment through a shifted lens.
