The Liminals (2023)

This project explores how sound functions as a form of memory, imprinting itself onto the spaces we pass through. A slanted shipping container, built as a transitional passageway connecting to another structure, became the site of investigation. Although typically used only for movement rather than dwelling, it was reimagined as a resonant chamber.

A geo-microphone inside the container captured live vibrations — footsteps, voices, and the resonance of metal responding to weather and activity. These sounds were transmitted into a room within the university, relocating the atmosphere of a transitional zone into what appeared to be a “final” destination.

By shifting the sonic qualities of one space into another, the work altered how the receiving environment was perceived. The everyday act of walking through a passageway became an archive of memory, prompting heightened awareness of how sound shapes time, place, and experience.
